Reflective worship

The Grappling with God series

Grappling with God is a complete resource that sheds new light on familiar Bible stories by means of prayer, meditation, study and discussion. It is designed for small groups and personal use. Themes covering the whole spectrum of human emotion and experience, relevant to every Christian, are teased out of the Bible stories, then opened up in meditation which forms the central focus of each session.

Each of the four books in this series contains 20 sessions, which follow a similar programme: An Introduction, setting the theme and showing its relevance for today • Bible reading • Meditation • Points to ponder • Discussion openers • Follow-up suggestions • Prayer. The four books were subsequently reprinted in one volume as Grappling with God.

The Unfolding Story: Resources for Reflective Worship on the Old Testament

The Unfolding Story

The Unfolding Story is a comprehensive parish resource for reflective worship on the Old Testament. It is designed for use in public worship or for quiet days, with the 80 meditations woven into themed ready-to-use orders of service. For many the Old Testament is a closed book – primitive and dull, often barbaric, irrelevant. To reconcile the God we find there with the God revealed in Jesus is sometimes hard. But it is also the story of a people’s journey across centuries towards an ever-deepening understanding of God’s greatness, love and mercy, all brought together in anticipation of the promised Messiah – a journey shared and continued by every Christian. The meditations in The Unfolding Story were previously published in Grappling with God. Nick Fawcett has now developed them into complete services with an  Introduction • Prayers • Hymn suggestions • Commentaries • Readings.

The A Man Like No Other/A Most Amazing Man series

Nick Fawcett’s prayers and meditations have always spoken powerfully to those who read and hear them – and these books, featuring entirely new material, are no exception. If you liked No Ordinary Man (1 and 2), then you’re going to value these books just a much.

The three A Most Amazing Man books offer a meditation for each Sunday of the Common Worship lectionary, based on the Gospel readings, one for every Sunday and major feast of the year, and each written from the perspective of Bible characters who appear in the Gospels. The meditations are ideal as a sermon supplement or replacement in a less formal all-age service. Section Two of each book has reflective services and resources for quiet days.

The three A Man Like No Other books use the same material as for A Most Amazing Man, but in a themed format aimed at non-lectionary users. Each comprise two sections: Section One is a series of meditations written from the perspective of the characters who appear in the Gospels. Section two has reflective services for Christian festivals throughout the year and resources for quiet days. Designed to be flexible, the material in these books provides a fresh and imaginative way of presenting the message of Christ and his challenge for today.

The No Ordinary series

No Ordinary Man was the first of my books to be published, and it remains one of my most popular. No Ordinary Man 2, featuring another 100 all-new meditations and following the same format as book 1, followed a few years later. No Ordinary Stories, originally published as To Put It Another Way and another of Nick’s earliest books, once again uses meditations, this time as a tool in reflecting on the message of the parable of Jesus: those timeless stories that continue to speak so powerfully today.

NO ORDINARY STORIES: MEDITATIONS AND WORSHIP MATERIAL ON THE PARABLES

(formerly printed as To Put It Another Way)

No Ordinary Stories

The parables – we know them so well. Or do we? We may think we have learnt everything they have to teach us, but in these unforgettable stories can be found some of Jesus’ most powerful and challenging teaching about the nature of discipleship and the kingdom of God. No Ordinary Stories does not set out to add anything to the words of Jesus – those stand complete in themselves. Rather, each of the 38 meditations focuses on a particular aspect of what he said and seeks to draw out its implications for our own lives. The meditations can be used independently to give a fresh perspective on the Bible readings and are also woven into 11 themed services for in-depth exploration of Jesus’ teaching in the parables.
