Some years back now I was in the middle of writing my book Daily Prayer (Book 2). As I’d expected, and rather feared, it turned out to be a massive job – so big, in fact that on several occasions I considered giving up. The pressure of writing it while at the same time earning a living was beginning to tell on my health. But Kevin Mayhew had already earmarked a slot in his publishing schedule and needed something to fill the gap. At his suggestion I’d already written a series of prayers to accompany photographs of animals, birds, teddy bears, babies and the like: the ‘Little Book of …’ series below. I’ve rarely enjoyed writing prayers more, and the combination of words and images has, I know, brought delight to many. Now, faced by that gap in his schedule, Kevin asked if I might write a few hundred similar prayers to go with those I’d already written, so as to produce a book of daily prayer for animal lovers, covering the whole year. The result this time was The Animal Lover’s Daily Prayer Book, and I also wrote three seasonal books following the same format. Some people, I think, felt I was selling out to commercialism by composing such material, but though the prayers are short and very simple, each, I believe, is brought to life by its associated picture, and has a real message to convey. I sincerely hope that the prayers in these books will speak both to you and for you.
