The otherness of God

I don’t know much about the following prayer-cum-reflection except that it has African roots. What I do know about it is that it wonderfully captures a sense of the otherness of God, the one who is beyond comprehension, higher than our highest thoughts, yet is constantly present and active in our world. Here are simple words (taken in this instance from my book A Calendar of Classic Prayer) that succeed in speaking of the infinite and eternal. Make them your own.

In the beginning was God,
today is God,
tomorrow will be God.
Who can make an image of God?
He has no body.
He is the word which comes out of your mouth.
That word!
It is no more.
It is past,
and still it lives!
So is God.
