The greater the darkness, the more powerfully even a tiny light seems to shine. For the followers of Jesus, no place could have seemed darker than the cross, or the tomb in which they broken-heartedly laid his body. Yet they came to understand in the days ahead that precisely there – in the bleakest, darkest moments of both life and death – a light had been shining, a light burning brighter than any other: the light of love, of forgiveness, of new beginnings, of life in all its fullness. That’s what this brief prayer from my book The Little Book of Easter Prayers simply and joyfully celebrates.

Thank you, Lord,
that in the darkness of the cross,
and the shadow of death,
your love not only continued to shine,
but burnt there more brightly than ever –
life surrendered bringing the light of life to all.
Amen.
