Meanwhile, here’s the fourth of seven poetic reflections from the book that I’ll be posting this
week to run alongside this promotion, this one taking as it’s starting point the rich man who came to Jesus asking what he must do to entre the kingdom of heaven, and moving from that to explore the commandment to love one another.
A rich man came seeking
A rich man came seeking, said, ‘What must I do
to enter your kingdom above?’
Said Jesus, ‘It’s simple: no secret involved.
Just follow my teaching on love.
‘Reach out to your neighbour – that’s all that I ask –
and love them as much as yourself.
Do this and discover, a gift beyond words:
a treasure more priceless than wealth.’
‘But who is my neighbour?’ the rich man replied.
‘I feel that you’re just poking fun.
So many live near me, too many to count –
you surely can’t mean every one!’
Then Jesus smiled gently, and turned to the man:
‘You misunderstand me indeed.
Yes, these are your neighbour, and countless besides:
your neighbour is any in need.’
He speaks still as clearly, as plainly today –
his challenge to me and to you.
To enter God’s kingdom, show love here on earth –
express it in all that you do.
