Below, I reproduce the Foreword from the book, to give you a flavour of its contents.
Following the publication of Short Prayers for Public Worship and Selected Prayers for Public Worship it was suggested that the material within them might usefully be adapted for personal devotions. The result is this book. Arranged thematically to assist the reader, each of the prayers has been carefully adapted and revised for individual use. Generally, of course, we will tend to use our own words in prayer, and it is right that we should, for ultimately all prayer is a personal matter between the individual and God. No one can tell us how to pray, still less fully articulate all our thoughts and feelings. Yet, having said that, there are times when prayer doesn’t come as easily as we would like, or when, in the press of a busy day, we simply do not have sufficient time prayerfully to gather our thoughts. At such moments, a resource of prayer to turn to can be immensely useful, helping us meaningfully yet simply to consecrate time to God. I remember my college principal, years back when I
was training for the ministry, emphasising that point urging all students to put together a collection of
prayer books and other material to nourish and enrich their prayer life. I have never forgotten that
advice, its wisdom repeatedly reinforced during my time in the pastoral ministry. This book, then, is
offered not as a substitute for, but as a supplement to, personal prayer. It is my hope that, through using it in whatever ways seem appropriate, it will help to nurture and express your ongoing relationship with God.
