From my book, God of Here, There and Everywhere, due out this autumn, here’s another of the prayers I’ve been attempting to write recently in language reminiscent of the ancient and much-loved Celtic tradition. It explores, simply, the countless blessings of this wondrous world.
Health of the verdant meadow be yours.
Laughter of the bubbling brook be yours.
Freedom of the soaring seagull be yours.
Vigour of the gusting wind be yours.
Sparkle of the twinkling stars be yours.
Brightness of the midday sun be yours.
Power of the roiling sea be yours.
Gentleness of the falling feather be yours.
Health of the well-toned athlete be yours.
Peace of the rippling pond be yours.
Promise of the new dawn be yours.
Energy of the teeming city be yours.
Innocence of the little child be yours.
Wisdom of the learned sage be yours.
Shelter of the mighty oak be yours.
Beauty of the blooming flower be yours.
Blessings of this wondrous world be yours –
today,
tomorrow
and always.
Amen.
