Our prayer today, taken from my book A Calendar of Classic Prayer, is, in my view, unforgettable. It may be short and simple, but it takes us to the very heart of the Christmas season with its wonderful message of God’s Word taking flesh. Based on the Wisdom of Solomon 18:14, the prayer comes from the Christmas Vespers of the Orthodox liturgy, and it beautifully captures a sense of that night long ago when shepherds first heard the good news and hurried to Bethlehem to see for themselves the newborn King. With them, we today can celebrate the glorious truth of the God who came down at Christmas, sharing our humanity so that we might enter his kingdom and share his eternal life.
While all things were in quiet silence,
and night was in the midst of her swift course,
thine Almighty Word, O Lord,
leaped down out of thy royal throne.
Alleluia!
Amen.
I have looked forward to receiving each post from you during Advent, finding them both poignant and thought provoking.
Your forever friend
Margaret
