Meanwhile, here’s the second of seven poetic reflections from the book that I’ll be posting this week to run alongside this promotion, this one focusing on those who have experience life-changing injuries.

For those who’ve been injured

For all those who’ve been injured –
the damage done severe –
deprived by what they’ve suffered
of much they once held dear;
their life now overshadowed
by harm beyond repair,
Lord God, for all such people,
we ask you, hear our prayer.

For those who’ve been assaulted,
left cruelly scarred for life
by acid or by beating,
by bullet or by knife;
now traumatised and broken,
lives haunted by despair,
Lord God, for all such people,
we ask you, hear our prayer.

For soldiers left disabled,
the casualties of war,
their life so very different
from what it was before;
adjusting to a challenge
at first too hard to bear,
Lord God, for all such people,
we ask you, hear our prayer.

For people racked by illness –
a shadow of the past.
For those who greet each morning
unsure if it’s their last.
For all those facing treatment
they fear they cannot bear,
Lord God, for all such people,
we ask you, hear our prayer.
