To me, prayer shouldn’t be separate from daily life, but should arise spontaneously from it, inspired by the ordinary sights, sounds and experiences that surround us. That was the raison d’être behind my book Heaven Touching Earth, as well as for the other books in the series, Touching Down, Touched By His Hand and Touching the Seasons. In the following, for example, a broken window leads to a prayer for those whose lives have been shattered by the experiences they’ve been through.
The broken window
One throw, that’s all it took –
one stone hurled by a thoughtless child
and suddenly the window was shattered,
reduced to jagged shards and splintered glass.
So many, Lord, find their lives shattered –
broken by the loss of a loved one,
accident or injury,
the onset of disease
or the breakdown of relationships –
and though sometimes they can be restored
and the pieces put back together,
sometimes they can’t,
in this life, at least, the damage too great to mend.
Reach out into fragmented hearts,
bringing healing and hope,
until that day when your kingdom comes,
and all is made whole.
Amen.
