To me, prayer shouldn’t be separate from daily life, but should arise spontaneously from it, inspired by the ordinary sights, sounds and experiences that surround us. That was the raison d’être behind my book Touching Down, as well as for the other books in the series, Heaven Touching Earth, Touched By His Hand and Touching the Seasons. In the following, for example, the experience of walking through a dark tunnel leads to a prayer seeking God’s help when we see no light ahead of us.
The tunnel
It was an eerie experience,
the darkness becoming ever deeper
until it enveloped me completely,
leaving me blundering about in confusion,
all sense of direction lost.
But then a chink of light,
distant but unmistakable,
and I pressed on towards it,
emerging finally into the brightness of day
and the warmth of the sun.
Support me, Lord, when my mood is black,
life seeming dark beyond redemption.
Though I feel hopelessly lost –
unsure where to turn next,
unsure of everything –
teach me that there is always light
at the end of the tunnel
and that your love will guide me to it.
Amen.
