From my book In a World of Tears and Sorrow, a prayer of intercession for a world in which nothing seems to change.
Another drought, another war,
one more catastrophe;
another bomb, another death,
in perpetuity.
Another person dying young,
another tragic death;
another act of genocide
or murder linked to race.
Another nation left in debt –
still deeper poverty.
Another famine, harvest failed –
a fresh calamity.
Another case of child abuse,
of harassment and rape;
of people trapped in slavery
from which there’s no escape.
It seems that nothing changes, Lord;
still less do things improve.
However much we beg you to,
you never seem to move.
Although faith seems a mystery –
we beg you: hear our prayer.
To all who face such misery,
reach out and show you care.
