Things not seen

Today, taken from my book A Calendar of Classic Prayer, a prayer of the third-century theologian, Origen of Alexandria (185–254). Origen’s father was martyred for his faith in 202, a fate Origen was to share just over 50 years later. During his lifetime, however, he achieved fame as a teacher, preacher and scholar, his reputation continuing today as one of the most eminent of the early Church Fathers. His books include a massive commentary on the Bible, together with various other exegetical works. When renewed persecution of the Church erupted in the middle of the third century, Origen was brutally tortured, his death almost certainly resulting from the horrific treatment he endured, but through it all his faith held firm. The following words help to explain the secret of his courage and commitment.

Lord, put your hands on our eyes,
that we shall be able to see not only that which is visible
but also that which is invisible.
Let our eyes be focused
not only on that which is present
but also on those things that are yet to come.
Unveil our heart’s visions,
that in spirit we may gaze on your glory.
Amen.
