To me, prayer shouldn’t be separate from daily life, but should arise spontaneously from it, inspired by the ordinary sights, sounds and experiences that surround us. That was the raison d’être behind my book Heaven Touching Earth, as well as for the other books in the series, Touching Down, Touched By His Hand and Touching the Seasons. In the following, for example, a concert given by a symphony orchestra leads to a prayer concerning the wonder of God, able to fill us with awe and inspire us to worship.
The symphony
It stirred my heart,
bringing a lump to my throat;
the emotions it aroused so powerful,
almost overwhelming,
that my spirit soared with the melody,
transported to new heights:
an ecstasy beyond words.
May the same be true, Lord, of knowing you,
your presence causing me to catch my breath in wonder,
to exult and marvel.
Instead of being an arid issue of the mind –
intellectually assenting to truth –
may faith be an affair of the heart,
capturing my imagination
and transporting me into your presence,
so that, overwhelmed with joy and filled with awe,
my spirit may rise to you each day
in rapturous praise and grateful worship.
Amen.
