A reflective poem on loneliness

One of the biggest problems in our society today is that of loneliness. Not that it is anything new – it has been a problem since time immemorial – but for all our modern-day social media and the like, it continues to be as real and painful an issue as ever. The following reflective poem, taken from my recent book In a World of Tears & Sorrow (published by Kevin Mayhew Ltd in 2018), reminds us of what they go through, and of what we, perhaps, can do to help.

No one comes to see them

No one comes to see them,
calls them on the phone;
day by day they sit there,
always on their own.
Someone’s feeling lonely,
someone’s feeling blue,
hoping for a visit –
will that come from you?

Nothing ever changes,
no one seems to care;
feels like they’re forgotten –
is there no one there?
Someone’s feeling lonely,
someone’s feeling blue,
hoping for a phone call –
will that come from you?

One day’s like another,
all of them the same:
yearning for a caller –
once more no one came.
Someone’s feeling lonely,
someone’s feeling blue,
hoping for a letter –
will that come from you?

Feeling quite abandoned,
starved of company.
Nobody to share with,
nobody to see.
Someone’s feeling lonely,
someone’s feeling blue,
hoping for some friendship –
will that come from you?
