Introduction
Here we have another prayer on the theme of God’s amazing grace. Written once again by Thomas à Kempis (1380–1471), it contrasts our unworthiness with God’s goodness, our feeble discipleship with his constant love, our ingratitude with his willingness still to bless. Do we take that for granted? I know I do. Time and time again I forget how much I owe and how much God has done. This prayer asks for help in making a more fitting and loving response.
Although I am unworthy of every good,
yet your greatness and infinite goodness, O God,
never cease to bless even the ungrateful
and those who have withdrawn from you.
Oh, convert us to you,
so that we may be thankful, humble, and devout,
because you are our salvation.
Amen.
