A prayer for Remembrance Day

Here’s a prayer for Remembrance Day that I’ve written this evening. Like yesterday’s, it will appear next year in the book I’m currently working on: Still, Still with Thee: Daily Prayers throughout the Year. Today, we thank God for those who have given their lives in war for the sake of others, and pray that the time will come when division will be no more and our world might know lasting peace. A naïve and idealistic dream? Perhaps. But a vision worth pursuing nonetheless.

They will turn their swords into ploughs and their spears into pruning tools; no longer will any nation take up the sword against another; nor will they pursue the way of war any more.
Isaiah 2:4

For those who surrendered their lives in the call of duty,
Lord, thank you.
For those who sacrificed all in standing up against tyranny,
Lord, thank you.
For those who died in the pursuit of peace,
Lord, thank you.
For those maimed, scarred, injured, in body or mind, in the defence of freedom,
Lord, thank you.
For those who endured the horrors of war,
the pain, privations, terror, trauma,
Lord, thank you.
For those who served in other capacities,
due to convictions, principles, creed,
Lord, thank you.
For those in reserved occupations,
their contributions vital for the war effort,
Lord, thank you.
For those who campaign for peace today,
Lord, thank you.
For those who fight against evil and oppression,
Lord, thank you.
For those who strive to heal divisions,
Lord, thank you.
For those on whom we depend today for our security,
Lord, thank you.
Grant that the day may come when there will be an end to war,
an end to conflict,
an end to confrontation,
when justice may prevail
and nation will work truly alongside nation for the greater good,
bringing lasting concord among all.
Amen.
