For God’s help in this time of crisis

For many in Ukraine at this time, God must seem strangely absent as they find themselves attacked and overwhelmed by Russian forces. Yet it is precisely at such a time that they, and the world in general, need God’s help more than ever, and need to keep faith that, despite everything that seems to count against it, God is there in the pain, the turmoil, the darkness.

A prayer for God’s help in this time of crisis

Lord God,
there is war:
where are you?
There is unprovoked aggression:
where are you?
There is death:
where are you?
There are atrocities:
where are you?
There is suffering:
where are you?
There is terror:
where are you?
There is danger:
where are you?
There are refugees in their thousands:
where are you?
There is indiscriminate shelling:
where are you?
There is destruction:
where are you?
There is despair:
where are you?
There are war crimes:
where are you?
There is devastation:
where are you?
There is need:
where are you?
There is sorrow:
where are you?
There is cruelty:
where are you?
Lord God,
there is a disaster unfolding before our eyes,
not of your making,
but of human tyranny.
None can blame you for it,
still less hold you to account,
but the people of Ukraine,
of the world,
need your love now,
your peace,
your guidance,
your strength,
your mercy,
more than ever.
Show yourself to us,
and grant your aid.
Amen.
